The architect’s final drawing of Errwood Hall which would have been approved by Samuel Grimshawe in around 1845. The illustration includes some wonderful detail, including two ladies being welcomed at the foot of the steps leading up the the grand country house.

The architect of Errwood Hall, Alexander Roos (1810-1881), was recommended to Samuel Grimshawe by his close friend, Alexander Hope. Roos studied architecture in Rome in the late 1820s and arrived in England some time after 1834. The style of the building was known as 'Italianate'. Click here for more on the two Alexanders.

The drawing belongs to Buxton Museum and Art Gallery's collection.
