Above: Jack Hewitt (sitting at far left with his daughter) was manager of Castedge coal mine, which lay just below Errwood Hall.
It’s one of five posts currently on the website which explore the topic of coal mining in the Goyt Valley.
But this can mean it’s difficult to find posts under a particular topic. The search field at the top of each page works reasonably well. But I’ve just added ‘topic tags’ to bottom of each post. These tags group posts under a wide list of topics. And should make finding what you’re interested in a lot easier.
I’ve also created a page with all the topic tags, including everything from coal mining to the suspension bridge.

I would like you to congratulate you on such a comprehensive blog. I have been viewing it for two days now and I still have lots to discover. It is well laid out and the research and documents provided make a fascinating archive of the area. What a transformation it has undergone in the last 100 years!
I have been walking our dogs around the Goyt reservoirs since the beginning of the 1980’s and was always fascinated by the history. I had read about Errwood Hall but it is the first time I have read about Goyts Bridge and never ever realised there was an established community in the valley, and that so much heritage was destroyed to make way for the reservoirs.
I have now subscribed and am looking forward to visiting the area once again. Keep up the great work.
